Why I Am Addicted to Cycling: A Journey of Freedom and Mental Health
When people ask why I am addicted to cycling, they often find it surprising. However, the answer is simple: it provides me with unparalleled freedom and a sense of accomplishment. I have been waiting for my friends or family to join me, but since I embarked on solo rides, I have found immense joy and satisfaction.
Finding Freedom and Independence
I vividly remember the day I started solo cycling. I was no longer reliant on others for company; instead, I was in charge of every journey. For the first time, I felt truly free and independent. The wind blowing through my hair, the horizon stretching endlessly in front of me, and the serene environment provides me with a profound sense of liberation. Without a doubt, cycling has become my ultimate escape from the daily grind.
From Triathlons to Elite Biking
While I may not be entirely addicted to cycling, there is a significant connection in my life with triathlons. Triathlons encompass a wide range of cardiovascular and cross-training exercises, making them an excellent challenge for me. Although I may not excel in all three disciplines, I have found that I am particularly skilled in cycling. It is my time to shine.
Triathlons offer a comprehensive physical and mental workout, combining swimming, cycling, and running. Participating in these events has allowed me to see myself as an athlete and push my limits. However, I must admit that my love for cycling runs deep and it has quickly become a major part of my personal brand and passion project.
The Benefits of Cycling
There are numerous reasons why I am so invested in cycling, and they touch on both physical and mental health. Here are a few key factors:
Bikes Look Cool: Owning a bike was a significant milestone for me. It was my first high-value item to own, and it brought with it a sense of status and accomplishment. First Form of Long Distance Transportation: A bike was my primary mode of transportation for significant distances, which helped me develop a sense of independence and responsibility. Early Speed and Recognition: From an early age, I was fast on a bike. This brought recognition and appreciation from my peers, enhancing my self-confidence and social interactions. Results and Satisfaction: The tangible results of my efforts in cycling are incredibly satisfying. Whether it’s mastering a challenging route or improving my overall endurance, I can see clear progress. Calming ADD: Cycling offers a unique combination of stillness and movement. Sitting still in the saddle while pedaling can be incredibly calming, and the visual passing landscape satisfies my need for movement. Healthy Outlet: Bicycling is a fantastic way to dispel anxiety and nervous energy. It is also an excellent channel for venting aggression in a safe and healthy manner through the physical effort. Community Bonding: Recently, it has become fashionable to ride bikes, and that has led to the formation of a vibrant community. Sharing the love of cycling with others is immensely rewarding and fosters a sense of belonging.Personal Anecdotes and Reflections
Reflecting on my love for cycling, I often muse about how it has enriched my life in so many ways. For example, mountain biking has taken me to places I would never have ventured on my own. The combination of physical challenge and mental clarity has been empowering.
My 75 years of age have not diminished my passion for cycling. In fact, I find it has become even more fulfilling. On most days, I go for rides lasting at least two hours. Even when running errands or shopping, I find myself cycling more often. My best thinking moment comes when my pedals are in motion, especially during longer rides. This has led me to develop a motto: “Burn calories, save dinosaurs.”
Cycling not only enhances my physical fitness but also provides an escape from the stresses of the world. It is a journey of self-discovery and a reminder that sometimes the simplest pleasures in life can bring the most profound benefits.
So, whether you are a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a new hobby, consider the many benefits that cycling can bring to your life. It offers freedom, health, and a sense of accomplishment. Join me on the bike and embrace the cycling lifestyle.
