While the stereotype suggests that multi-level marketing (MLM) companies target women simply because they have more free time, there are deeper reasons why women are often the primary focus. This article explores the motivations behind this choice and highlights the unique advantages women bring to the table in the context of MLMs.
The Historical Context: Women as Primary Purchasing Decision-Makers
The first direct selling company, The California Perfume Company, which later became Avon, was designed to target women. This trend has persisted because a majority of purchasing decisions in households are made by women. This makes women more effective at selling to other women within their social circle due to their inherent role as key decision-makers. The reason for this is straightforward: women are naturally more skilled in sales and collaborative communication, attributes that are crucial in the face-to-face nature of MLMs.
Why Certain Demographics Fall for MLM Pitch
MLMs do not target a specific demographic, but certain demographics are more prone to their pitches due to a variety of reasons. For instance, many MLMs offer products such as makeup, aromatherapy, candles, or jewelry, which are subjective in value and do not rely on strict factual data for their appeal. These products are often seen as expressions of personal style or self-care routines, making them particularly attractive to consumers who value these aspects.
Women's Dominance in MLMs
Industry statistics indicate that women are more likely to succeed in MLMs, accounting for 80% of all workers in this sector. In traditional corporate settings, women are often overlooked for promotions to higher positions due to unconscious biases. However, in the MLM environment, there is no favoritism, and success is purely a reflection of the individual's hard work and performance. This equal opportunity dynamic is particularly beneficial for women who strive to advance their careers. My personal experience reflects this, growing up in a household with predominantly female family members, which made me more comfortable communicating with women and led me to recruit women for my team, as they typically perform better.

This additional free time can be leveraged to start and manage a home-based internet business, such as an MLM. With a variety of options like Avon, MaryKay, or the scented candle company Tupperware, women can find suitable businesses to engage with and excel in. Additionally, women are more familiar with the benefits of these products, such as kitchen-related items in Tupperware, due to their experiences with family and household routines. Furthermore, women are often more outgoing and sales-oriented, making them natural referral specialists within their social networks.

Training and nurturing teams require a unique set of skills, and women tend to excel at these.
