When can you start using sprinklers?
Opening your sprinkler system for the season will depend on the weather conditions and your individual watering needs. As a general rule, the system should not be opened until the threat of frost is passed. If you are an early planter, we recommend waiting to open your system until after April 15.
Can I water grass 5pm?
If it’s not convenient to water in the morning, late afternoon is the next best time. However, don’t wait too long. Although it might seem smart to wait until night, when temperatures are cooler, watering in the evening keeps lawns wet overnight, which can make the grass susceptible to disease.
When should I turn on my sprinklers Long Island?
It’s important to have your irrigation system activated in the spring to ensure that your sprinkler system is working properly when the warm weather arrives. Our irrigation experts will turn the water on at the tap or well, examine the system fully, and adjust the heads as needed.
What is the best watering schedule for grass?
To water well, timing is everything. Water in the early morning – between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Midday watering leads to wasteful evaporation, while nighttime watering causes droplets to cling to grass overnight, increasing the chance of lawn diseases.
How long should sprinklers run in each zone?
Sprinklers should be set to run for about 30 to 35 minutes at a time twice a week. Your goal is at least 1″ of water a week for your lawn. When it’s hot and dry, double the water times while still trying to water just 2 or 3 days a week.
When should I start watering my lawn in the spring?
Typically, you should wait until the days become consistently hot and dry to start watering. You can even wait for your lawn to start showing signs of stress before you start watering; it will recover quickly once you treat it to a good soak.
Will watering dead grass bring it back?
Bad news: If the grass is totally dead due to drought, there’s no way to bring it back. However, reviving brown lawns that are simply dormant usually occurs within three to four weeks of regular irrigation. Improper Mowing: Mowing the lawn too short can stress the grass and cause it to turn dry and brown.
Can you just sprinkle grass seed on lawn?
If you simply toss the grass seed onto the soil, you will end up with poor germination. Next, you can use a lawn spreader to put down the grass seed. Very little soil is actually needed to cover the seeds, typically about ¼- inch, so simple raking will do the trick.
How do I bring my grass back to life?

How many minutes should you water each zone?
Run your sprinkler and see how long it takes to get a half inch of water in the can – just like a rain gauge. Usually it’s about 30 minutes. So 20 minutes, 3 times per week will get an inch of water on your lawn, and 30 minutes 3 times per week will get 1 ½” down.
How often should you water your lawn on Long Island?
Watering lightly every day or so lets roots be lazy and stay near the surface. A healthy lawn will not die of thirst in Long Island’s climate, but it may need irrigation to avoid going dormant and turning brown in the height of summer. Water only when necessary.
Is it too early to turn on sprinklers?
The Best Time To Start Up Your Sprinkler Typically we don’t suggest that our customers start up their systems until the end of April or the first of May. Some years, we may even be a bit later than that. Usually, the forsythias are blooming by the end of March; some years, they just start to bloom in April.
Why is my grass dying even though I water it?
Grass turns brown when roots can no longer grab nutrients or water from soil, or when soil doesn’t contain enough food or water.
Should you leave grass clippings on the lawn?
Simply put, grass clippings are good for lawns because they turn into natural fertilizer. When you leave your clippings on your lawn, you give them the chance to decompose, releasing water and nutrients back into your lawn’s soil.
Is it better to run sprinklers at night?
It’s important, though, to make sure you water it properly. If you run a sprinkler at night, for example, it sets up the perfect conditions for disease to take hold. If you water too lightly, the grass roots will not grow deeply enough, setting your lawn up for trouble when hot weather hits.
